One Teen’s Idea. Free Swim Lessons for 780 Children

At 17, Jeremiah Carnegie wanted more children to experience the sport he loved. His idea helped bring free swimming lessons to 780 children from Newham.

The initiative, Newham Future Swimmers, became a partnership between his swimming club, NUEL, and leisure operator Everyone Active.

Over two weeks at the London Aquatics Centre, the programme welcomed 320 children with no previous swimming experience, alongside 460 who already had some experience in the water.

Everyone Active provided pool space and four swimming teachers, while NUEL contributed coaches and volunteers. Families who needed swimming equipment received it free of charge.

Alongside their lessons, children learned about water safety. They finished the programme with certificates and medals to celebrate their efforts.

Jeremiah’s contribution began with an idea, but a team helped turn it into hundreds of opportunities to learn, gain confidence and enjoy the pool.

A reminder that you don’t have to wait until adulthood to make a difference in your community.
