He Saved His Dad Twice — First Bone Marrow, Then a Kidney

Joshua Andrew was travelling in Australia when he learned that his father’s kidney function was declining. At 23, he returned to Britain to prepare for a donation that would help his dad for the second time.

Years earlier, Joshua had donated bone marrow during his father David’s treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

David, 57, later developed chronic kidney disease linked to his chemotherapy. When he needed a transplant, Joshua was found to be an excellent match.

The operations took place at London’s Royal Free Hospital in January 2025. In its February update, the hospital reported that both father and son were recovering at home.

Joshua credited his mother, Lois, and the hospital team for supporting them through appointments, tests and surgery.

For the family, this was more than another operation. It was another chance to share everyday moments together, made possible by a son’s extraordinary generosity.

Two donations, years apart. One enduring bond between a father and his son.
