At 73, Dave Whitlow has found a meaningful way to spend his retirement: comforting some of a hospital’s smallest patients.
For eight years, he has volunteered as a baby cuddler at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU in Virginia, visiting the neonatal intensive care unit twice a week.
Before holding an infant, Dave checks with the nurses about the baby’s condition. He puts on protective clothing and gloves, then settles in to offer a gentle, reassuring presence.
His visits also support the staff. Having a trusted volunteer soothe a baby gives nurses time to attend to other essential care.
Before returning each little one to their bed, Dave shares the same six words:
“Grow strong, grow smart, grow kind.”
It’s a small wish for a future he may never get to see—and a touching reminder that giving your time can make a difference.
For Dave, retirement has become a chance to keep showing up, one baby and one quiet moment at a time.
