On May 22, 2014, photographer Hayne Palmour IV captured a quiet family moment at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
Jenn Budenz lay on a blanket beside her two-month-old son, Andrew Jr., known as AJ, while visiting the grave of her husband, Marine Corps Major Andrew Budenz.
Andrew had died in a motorcycle accident near his California base in 2013, before he could meet his son.
In the photograph, Jenn reaches toward their baby. Nearby sits a framed picture of Andrew in uniform, while photographs printed on the blanket keep his face close.
Reporting about the image described Jenn and AJ visiting daily during that period. The photograph was originally taken for a Memorial Day story about grief among military families.
Behind an image shared across the internet were three people with names, a family history and a loss that could not be captured by a short caption.
It remains a moving scene of remembrance: a mother beside her child, keeping the memory of his father close.
