Argentine pediatric surgeon Mariano Ojeda took his skills far beyond home, travelling to Angola to provide free operations for children with cleft lips and other congenital conditions.
His work continued a family tradition. His father, surgeon Aníbal Ojeda, had dedicated years to helping children in Argentina and became Mariano’s mentor.
In 2019, father and son travelled to Angola together. Mariano later returned for further missions, working alongside medical teams to reach children with limited access to specialist care.
Reports describe more than 100 children receiving free surgery across his visits. The missions also included training local doctors, helping care continue after the visiting team left.
For Mariano, the work connected the lessons he learned from his father with the needs of families thousands of kilometres away.
His story is a reminder that compassion becomes something practical when people share their time, knowledge and skills. Sometimes, a lasting legacy is the care one generation teaches the next to give.
