Mysterious “Jellyfish Cloud” Lights Up the Sky After SpaceX Launch From Florida

People across Florida and parts of the eastern United States were treated to an extraordinary sight before sunrise when a SpaceX rocket launch transformed the dark morning sky into what looked like a giant glowing jellyfish.

Photos quickly began spreading online, showing enormous clouds of blue, white and orange light stretching across the horizon. In some images, the formation appeared almost transparent, with bright strands spreading outward like the tentacles of a jellyfish floating through space.

Despite its unusual appearance, the spectacle was not a mysterious weather event or something extraterrestrial.

It was created by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The rocket lifted off at approximately 6:33 a.m. EDT on October 13, 2026, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. It was carrying SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft on NASA’s CRS-35 commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station. NASA

But while the mission itself was important, the incredible visual display in the sky quickly captured public attention.

Why Did the Rocket Look Like a Giant Jellyfish?

The explanation comes down to timing, altitude and sunlight.

When the Falcon 9 launched, people standing on the ground were still surrounded by the darkness of the early morning. The Sun had not yet risen above their local horizon.

But the rocket climbed rapidly to an altitude where sunlight was already shining.

As the engines released exhaust high in the atmosphere, the plume expanded dramatically in the thin surrounding air. Sunlight then illuminated that material from below the horizon, making the exhaust glow brightly against the darker sky seen by observers on the ground.

The result was a massive luminous shape that seemed to float across the sky.

NASA specifically described the phenomenon as a “jellyfish,” explaining that it occurs around sunrise or sunset when sunlight illuminates a rocket’s exhaust plume high above Earth. NASA

The conditions have to be just right.

During a launch in the middle of the day, sunlight already fills the sky, so the plume does not stand out nearly as dramatically.

During the middle of the night, there may not be sunlight at the right altitude and angle to illuminate the exhaust.

But when a rocket launches shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, observers may still be standing in darkness while the rocket hundreds of miles away and high above the surface catches direct sunlight.

That contrast can create an unforgettable display.

Blue, White and Orange Colors Filled the Sky

Photographs captured from different locations show that the plume did not appear as one simple white trail.

Parts of it glowed blue or silver while other sections appeared orange and gold.

As the plume expanded and changed shape, it created formations that looked more like a nebula or an enormous translucent creature than ordinary rocket exhaust.

Residents across Florida and Georgia reported seeing the spectacle, while NASA said the exhaust plumes were visible across the eastern United States. NASA

Because the rocket was moving quickly while its exhaust continued to spread through the upper atmosphere, the appearance also changed from minute to minute.

Someone watching from one location could see an enormous rounded cloud, while another observer farther away might see a long glowing trail stretching across the horizon.

The Rocket Was Carrying Thousands of Pounds to the ISS

Behind the beautiful display was a working space mission.

The Dragon spacecraft was carrying more than 6,300 pounds of scientific investigations, supplies and equipment to the International Space Station. The mission represented SpaceX’s 35th commercial resupply services flight for NASA. NASA

Among the cargo were scientific experiments and hardware intended for astronauts and researchers aboard the orbiting laboratory.

After Falcon 9 carried Dragon toward orbit, the rocket’s stages separated. The first-stage booster then returned toward Earth while the upper stage continued moving the spacecraft along its journey toward the station. Space

The mission demonstrates how a launch that serves a highly technical purpose can simultaneously create an extraordinary sight for people hundreds of miles away.

Social Media Quickly Filled With Photos

For many people, the first reaction was simply confusion.

Someone walking outside early in the morning might reasonably wonder what enormous glowing object had appeared above them.

But once reports of the SpaceX launch began circulating, the explanation became clear.

Photos captured from neighborhoods, highways, beaches and even airplanes showed the phenomenon from dramatically different perspectives.

Some images captured a circular glowing cloud surrounding a bright point of light.

Others showed an enormous blue plume spreading across the horizon with orange sunlight illuminating its center.

From certain angles, the resemblance to a jellyfish was remarkable.

And although experienced launch watchers may have seen similar effects before, the phenomenon still feels unusual because only certain launches produce such spectacular lighting conditions.

The photographs are also a reminder of how dramatically different the atmosphere can look at high altitude.

While people below were waiting for sunrise, the rocket had already climbed high enough to enter sunlight.

For a brief moment, those two environments met in one remarkable visual display.

What looked like a mysterious glowing creature floating above the East Coast was actually sunlight, rocket exhaust and perfect timing combining to create one of the most beautiful side effects of a journey into space.
